9. Leonard & Penny The Big Bang Theory
Weve known from day one that Leonard had fallen madly in love with neighbour Penny the moment he laid eyes on her. Millions of us spent two years watching him pine for her until finally, after a trip to the South Pole, Leonard returned to LA to Pennys open arms. It felt like a big victory for every geeky guy who was in love with someone way out of their league and was a great payoff for years of character development. That is, until later on in the third season. At the hands of the devilishly brilliant Will Wheaton and a highly competitive bowling game, Leonard and Pennys romance came to an end. Penny simply couldnt bring herself to tell Leonard she loved him and broke off their relationship right there and then in front of their friends. Such a public humiliation of Leonard was difficult for us to watch as Penny walked away in tears, prompting a distraught Leonard to murmur I think its already awful. This heart-wrenching end of such a promising relationship so early on in the series brought back the will-they-wont-they aspect of the show that was originally one of its strengths, but it didnt make this scene any easier to watch.
