10 Hidden Gem Horror TV Shows You Need To Watch
2. Marianne
French horror Marianne takes something of a meta approach to its narrative, showcasing a fiction within a fiction.
Focusing on popular horror novelist Emma, the show quickly becomes a terrifying Inkheart-esque tale, as she steadily discovers that the titular witch and villain of her books, Marianne, is also appearing in the real world, and that the words Emma writes influence future events.
Thought it takes the fairly common trope of an ‘imaginary’ childhood demon continuing to haunt the protagonist in adulthood, the show successfully elevates the concept through metaphors of addiction and its continual preying on the characters’ emotions - with the writing Emma began as a way to fight Marianne ending up holding her hostage.
Something of a sleeper hit, Marianne realises its evil so frighteningly that the show immediately captured the imagination of all horror fans who discovered it.
Despite this, the series deserves far more exposure, and if you can look beyond the subtitles contextlessly goofy prosthetics, you will find some of the best supernatural horror to grace the small screen in recent years.
