10 Hidden Gem Horror TV Shows You Need To Watch

3. Ares

The first of two foreign language horrors on this list, little-known Dutch Netflix original Ares takes on themes of cults, colonial racism, and the fanatically violent lengths some will go to and then keep secret for power with confidence and beautiful art direction.

Set within a top-flight medical school in Amsterdam, the series sees mixed-race first year student Rosa become further and further involved with an exclusive and increasingly frightening student society, the titular Ares.

Despite the historically white society’s discomfort with her involvement, racism proves to be only one of many of this show’s horrors, as Rosa’s descent into Ares’ dark depths is trailed by a series of mysterious suicides at the school.

While this show is certainly not for the fainthearted, and the extremely prominent themes of mental health, suicide, and self harm mean that those who find these subjects distressing should tread lightly, Ares handles them well.

Combining the true horror of the misdeeds of those in control with a supernatural manifestation of that same evil, Ares leaves you thinking about it days after the credits roll.
