The late Bernie Mac was one of the most respected and funniest comedians in the world when he passed away in 2008. While it was his stand-up work that brought him notoriety, it was his sitcom that made him a household name.

The Bernie Mac Show was very loosely based on his comedy act. The premise of of the series was Bernie and his wife Wanda taking in the three children of his drug addicted sister when she could no longer care for them. Bernie Mac was, to extent, playing himself, a popular and famous stand-up comedian. This allowed for a variety of celebrities to appear on the series as themselves.

On screen, Bernie and Wanda didn't have kids of their own, so they had to learn on the fly. Mac's approach to being a neophyte parent combined with his acerbic comedy stylings made for a lot of funny moments. The series also featured frequent scenes where Mac would sit and talk directly to the audience, which lent authentic moments of emotion and humor.
