5. Everybody Hates Chris

Judging by the fact that he remains one of the most popular stand-up comedians around, it might be more accurate to say that everyone loves Chris Rock. Apparently, not so much when he was younger.

Set in the mid-1980s, Everybody Hates Chris chronicled a fictionalized version of his life as a teenager in Brooklyn. Fictionalized is the key word here as Rock would have been a teenager in the late 70s and early 80s. Regardless, this critically acclaimed comedy won the hearts of both fans and critics.

Rock obviously did not play himself but he was the narrator. The energy he brought to the show was a big part of its success. It also featured Terry Crews as Rock's on screen father. For anybody familiar with the man's work, Crews is built like an action hero but has incredible comedy chops. The man was born to be funny.

One of the things that made this series work was Chris Rock choosing to end it after season four. He felt the story had run its course and wanted to end things while the show was still good. You have to respect that.
