10 Historicals That Show What Modern Doctor Who Is Missing

2. The Aztecs

The Aztecs is one of the more well-known historical serials and it thankfully has all of its episodes intact, allowing it to show off the great sets and costumes that were made for this story.

Things kick off when the TARDIS materializes inside an Aztec pyramid. Once the gang leaves the room the TARDIS is in, they realize that the door cannot be opened from the other side, so they must find another way back to the TARDIS. In the meantime, Barbara gets mistaken for the goddess Yetaxa, and believes that she can use the power she has over the people to steer them away from human sacrifice and to save their civilization.

Elsewhere, Ian gets roped into the military, and much like in the upcoming but previously discussed The Romans, he is forced to do battle, and the Doctor becomes accidentally engaged to a woman after sharing a cup of cocoa, since he was not aware of Aztec customs.

Like in Farewell, Great Macedon, this is a story about how the TARDIS crew can’t really change established history. However, Barbara has the opposite outlook, and believes that she can make things different.
