10 Horror TV Shows That Ended On A Cliffhanger
2. Lovecraft Country
HBO maintained their reputation as the kings of so-called ‘prestige television’ with this wonderfully weird and socially conscious remix of the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Following an always excellent Jonathon Majors as Atticus Freeman, the show tracks our hero’s journey across America with friend Letitia, witnessing the horrors of the Jim Crow era alongside various eldritch monstrosities ripped straight from the Necronomicon. The show received near-universal acclaim from critics and audiences, who praised the creativity, performances and deftly handled themes of social injustice.
The climax of this show won’t be spoiled here as you should absolutely check it out for yourself; it ends on a decisive conclusion, as well. So what gives with this entry? The real cliffhanger was actually in what was promised to be coming in the cancelled second season. Showrunner Misha Green confirmed that Lovecraft Country would be pseudo-anthology series, similar to Fargo, that would cover similar themes in different eras with different characters.
Season 2, tentatively titled Lovecraft Country: Supremacy would show an alt-history USA in which slavery never ended in certain districts and had ended up being absorbed into a form of modern white-supremacist society. There were also hints at a zombie epidemic that a new cast of protagonists would have likely had to contend with alongside the Hunger Games-like setting. As thoroughly tough viewing as this premise sounds, it’s a complete travesty we’ll likely never see it given the quality of the show’s first outing.
