10 Horror TV Shows That Would Make Incredible Movies
9. Penny Dreadful
Having just seen a revival in the form of City of Angels, it seems that there is still a broad audience for this series which could mean that it has enormous potential as a feature-length film.
Penny Dreadful is dark and gothic, with its horror relying on its connection to all folkloric and classic literary scare stories. There is hardly any supernatural subject that isn't covered, but it always feels appropriate and never shoehorned in.
The original series told of the antics of a collection of people, Sir Malcolm Murray, Victor Frankenstein, Ethan Chandler and Vanessa Ives, as they worked together to combat supernatural threats in Victorian London. The setting gives it an instant charm that feels ghostly and unnerving.
Additionally, the character work is fantastic. Each lead and supporting role is charismatic, and all seem to be hiding a dark truth. No-one feels irrelevant and they all appeal to a different style of fright.
This would translate well to film as the grand concepts feel inherently cinematic. With a larger budget and focus on specific supernatural occurrences, this could generate an incredibly tense and frightening experience which has audiences everywhere simultaneously petrified and excited.
