6. Mark Corrigan Marries Sophie Despite Not Loving Her Peep Show
Mark Corrigan, the hero of pessimists nationwide, is a character who rarely gets what he wants. Hell, even if he does get what he wants, he's rarely happy about it, the miserable sod. He spends much of the early Peep Show days brooding over Sophie (Olivia Colman), struggling to find friends in Daryl and Jeff, and turning up to parties with one goal: to get his shopping home in tact. It certainly feels like Mark's turning a corner though when he realises he wants to propose to Sophie. It seems that finally, things might be actually okay for the man, but after a short chat with Jez, he commits an emotional u-turn; he doesn't love Sophie after all. He won't propose and they can just forget all about it. He walks back to their hotel hoping to dump her, not marry her. Sophie finds the ring though, and Mark doesn't have the heart to tell her really how he feels. The two end up married, immediately divorce, and Mark is seen as the bad guy anyway. It's so unfair, especially considering how much we love Mark: why would you give us hope of him having a happy ending before snatching it away from him? That's just cruel.
