10 Hugely Underrated Fantasy TV Shows From The Last Decade
10. Grimm (2011-present)
NBC's Grimm aired in the same season as ABC's Once Upon a Time and shares a fairytale premise, but has been somewhat overshadowed by its rival. Grimm is a mash-up of procedural and urban fantasy, in which Nick Burkhardt, a Portland P.D. detective, learns of his ability to see the true appearances of supernatural creatures called Wesen who otherwise seem human.
The show initially relied on its duller procedural elements to a frustrating extent, but has now embraced its own mythology and expanded its core cast to form a team reminiscent of Buffy's Scooby Gang. It's also expunged some of the flimsier elements of its premise, like the need for every storyline to resemble a fairytale, and the quotations which begin each episode now have thematic rather than plot implications. David Giuntoli, who plays Nick, has improved immeasurably since the first season and works well with the scene-stealing Silas Weir Mitchell as Blutbad (wolf Wesen) Monroe.
Grimm is still working out issues like linking its storylines together and introducing a true big bad, and you'll struggle if you have a problem with badly pronounced German, but it is consistently well-acted and more than a little scary. If you haven't watched it since its mediocre opening episodes, it's worth revisiting it now.
