10 Incredible Horror TV Shows With No Jump Scares

7. Penny Dreadful

Castle Rock
Showtime

The title of this series refers to a collection of 19th-century British fiction stories, the Penny Dreadfuls, and provides a unique and perplexing spin on some of the oldest horror icons.

Characters brought to life in the show include Dorian Gray, Frankenstein, Henry Jekyll, of Jekyll and Hyde, and many more that all bring a wonderfully weird color to this Victorian Gothic styled set piece.

Set in the late 1800s, our adventures include saving a damsel in distress from a mysterious creature, taking on a coven of witches and even a tussle with the great Dracula himself. Each season is dosed with a touch of dark fantasy and is only outdone by every new creature it introduces.

The show excels when embracing its weirdly enigmatic charm while feeling like something right out of the pages of a Bram Stoker novel. With an overarching story that keeps you gripped and enough creatures to keep you set all the way to Halloween, Penny Dreadful earns its title and is a terrific old-school horror experience.
