10 Incredible Similarities Between Doctor Who And Sherlock
10. Irene Adler/River Song
It doesn't take Sherlock Holmes or even a viewer of both shows to draw a parallel between Lara Pulver's performance in Sherlock as Irene Adler, and Alex Kingston's in Who as River Song. Both act as the woman who's equal to the main man; if you actually watch either show, you know that they both have an extremely complicated relationship where the woman's love is clearer than the man's. And I hope you do watch either, or both, shows. Or most of this article will be lost on you. Talking though of complicated relationships, Sherlock enjoys to berate Irene: "You cater to the whims of the pathetic and take your clothes off to make an impression: stop boring me and think," he spits at her. And it's fairly similar to, if not somewhat harsher than, the Doctor telling River that she embarrasses him, or that he doesn't trust her. These are two men regarded by fans as asexual; the chemistry with women is there obviously in the flirting but Moffat chooses to spike their relationships with insults. But while both Irene and River are confident, apparently bisexual, well-dressed, dangerous and possibly out to kill the men they love, we really don't know whether to trust them most the way through their stories their depictions are perhaps best viewed through the minds of Sherlock and the Doctor. Only the Doctor could see River in 'The Name of the Doctor', and as Moffat brought a probable end to that arc, the Doctor claimed, "You're always here to me... and I can always see you." Likewise, in 'The Sign of Three', Sherlock realised he was dreaming about Irene in his mind palace, and before telling her to get out of his head, as he was busy. And that really tells you all you need to know. That despite the girls' psychopathic tendencies that Moffat's so keen to show us, both the Doctor and Sherlock really do think about the women an awful lot.
