10 Incredible Similarities Between Doctor Who And Sherlock
8. Repeated Lines And Accidental References
Imagine, if you will, a graph plotted with Eleventh Doctor phrases. You'd start with "Geronimo". Then the saying about everything being "cool". Slope down to "imagine something that isn't anything like what I'm describing", and then end at "I hate you"/"No you don't". We all know the Matt Smith-era catchphrases, perhaps more than we think we do, as this graph would suggest. But what about the lines that Sherlock shares with the Oncoming Storm? There's a line in 'The Hungry Earth' about eliminating the impossible, to which the Doctor smiles. There's the "Shut up" when the cogs are ticking for both the Doctor and Sherlock. There's insulting inferior species when he's angst-ridden (that's both of them, by the way). The oh-ful glee with which they both stumble upon eureka moments. Both the Doctor and Sherlock claim they don't have time for dinner with River and Irene, respectively. And there's the Cumberbatchian manner with which the Doctor deduces how Sardick is different from his father. The scene where Sherlock first confronts Moriarty could almost be a reference to the Tenth Doctor facing the Krillitane in 'School Reunion', as both are set in swimming pools. While this could be mistaken for coincidence, but there's no denying the similarities between both encounters; Sherlock and Ten are cool, composed and quietly dark, and their enemies are god-complexed lunatics.
