The early days of BBC Three were an interesting time indeed. Free from the shackles of the mainstream, the channel was able to embrace more bizarre and out-there shows, and Ideal was one of its crown jewels.

This long-running dark comedy follows the daily life of Moz, a Manchester-based weed-dealer whose clientele range from everyday folks on the breadline to mouse-mask-wearing serial killers. Much of the show's humour and charm comes from Moz's interactions with this melting-pot of weirdos and outcasts - most of whom get equal time to shine and develop over the course of its seven series.

The action mostly takes place inside Moz' run-down council flat, as a revolving-door of clients come to him for advice, drugs, and to get him involved in various illegal activities. With each series, the darkness grew more intense but anchoring it all was Johnny Vegas, whose grounded portrayal of Moz meant that things never went too far off the deep end.

It was surreal, highly unconventional, and genuinely quite brilliant. Although it seems to have slipped away into obscurity these days, being surprisingly absent from most streaming services. Yet for those that like their comedy extra dark, Ideal is well worth seeking out.
