10 Incredibly Dark British TV Comedy Series You NEED To Watch

9. Garth Marenghi's Darkplace

Psychoville clown
Channel 4

Compared to the other entries on the list, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is perhaps the most palatable show for those who aren't so keen on gallows humour, but make no mistake as beneath all the poor special-effects and cracking one-liners, there's plenty of macabre humour to sink your teeth into.

A show within a show, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is part hospital-drama and part late-night horror show. Set within the seemingly innocuous corridors of Darkplace, a hospital that happens to be situated over a portal to hell, this off-the-wall series was deemed too scary by the powers that be to ever be broadcast. Cut to twenty years later, and the cast and crew have resurrected it for the masses - complete with on-camera commentary that takes itself far too seriously.

Whilst not the first comedy series to use meta-humour in such a way, Darkplace is a genuine treat for horror fans as it offers up plenty of affectionate pastiches of well-worn tropes which are complimented perfectly by its intrinsically British sense of humour.

Sadly, we only ever got one series of Darkplace due to poor viewing figures, but its legacy as an unsung classic of British comedy has seen it garner quite the following.
