A judging panel can either have harmony and mutual respect or be as a frosty as the relationship between Madonna and Lady Gaga. American Idol season 12 was pretty much like the latter, when a feud erupted between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey. The pair replaced Jennifer Lopez when she took time off to go on a tour. The season was star studded but immediately you could cut the tension with a knife. Mariah obviously didn't take too kindly to having another woman on the panel and that was clear even from the promos. Idol is more American than apple pie and having two divas tear each other apart was completely unappealing to family viewers and the ratings reflected that. Nicki and Mariah being put together on the same show is like throwing a cat amongst the pigeons. There is so much diva energy between them that it easily boils over. Mariah is the veteran in the industry, winning over music fans with an incredible range and fantastic hooks in her tracks. Nicki is young and fresh, killing it with her guest spots and non-conforming fashion. The spats on the panel were rooted in this divide. Mariah has commented that she was under the impression she would be the only female on the panel on the show. Nicki was invading her moment and Mariah was just defending her territory, in her eyes anyway. I feel that Nicki gave better feedback overall during that season, but as sparring partners they will be remembered for their colourful hate-hate relationship on screen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4TfvfQ2trU
