As The Clone Wars went on, it became incredibly dark. Whilst the first two-or-so seasons were more accessible to younger audiences, by the latter stages of season three everything had become remarkably cruel and cynical.

Never has this been more true than with the brilliant Battle of Umbara arc in the show's fourth season, which saw Rex and his men being led by the ruthless and morally compromised Jedi Master Pong Krell.

Krell, as it turned out, had slipped to the Dark Side, and was taking some kind of pleasure in leading his men to their needless deaths, because he could sense a darker power rising. But before this revelation came, Rex and his men were told their opponents had taken to wearing clone armour, so when they came across some clones, they opened fire, sure Krell's intel was sound.

Unfortunately - in the darkest moment of the show - Rex realised they were shooting their own men, and had killed numerous clones thanks to Krell's deception. Wow.
