10 Modern Doctor Who Stories That Waste Great Ideas
4. The Sontaran Stratagem & The Posion Sky
This two part story had everything going for it. Not only was it going to re-introduce the Sontarans, a classic monster that hadn't been seen yet in the revival era of the show, but it was also bought Martha back into the story while she worked at U.N.I.T. This all sounded great, but the two part story was a bit of a disappointing viewing experience.
The Sontarans using SatNavs as a weapon against the human race isn't the worst idea, especially with the improvement of self-driving cars in recent years, but it doesn't really suit the Sontarans. Pair this with the fact that they aren't taken as seriously as they probably should've been, and their grand return is really underwhelming. Martha may return for the story but she's absent for a large part of it, which was really annoying for fans of the companion.
All this story needed to do was make the Sontarans appear as a serious threat to The Doctor and Earth, while also showing how Martha had developed without The Doctor. Instead, the Sontarans have a weird war-cry/dance that just makes you laugh at them, while Martha is replaced by a clone. Cool.
