8. The Shroud
What Is It? Maximillian Coleridge saw his parents gunned down before him as a child and vowed to dedicate his life to fighting crime. Once he graduated college, he joined the mysterious Cult of Kali and studied various styles of martial arts. Upon completing his training, he was branded with the Kiss of Kali, which replaced his eyesight with an extrasensory perception. Returning to the States, he adopted the identity of the Shroud and, after gaining the power to tap into the Darkforce dimension, began masquerading as a criminal to destroy the underworld from within.
How To Do It Right? Creator Steve Englehart acknowledged that the Shroud was intended as a mash-up of Batman and the Shadow, and it shows. Hes also got a bit of Daredevil and the Green Hornet thrown in for good measure. But when you simplify it, hes a manipulator who beats criminals at their own game. While Id personally like to see the supernatural aspects acknowledge, such as his Darkforce abilities, those are by no means necessary for a successful take. The main focus of this series would be the Shroud acting as a criminal, but really working to take down crooks. Think the Green Hornet, where the hero masquerades as a villain, except this time around, there's no Seth Rogen to ruin it.
