10 Most Bizarre Doctor Who Moments

3. Sontarans LOVE Chocolate (The Vanquishers)

There might be a pinch of recency bias at play here, but it's still fair to say that nobody would've predicted a scene like this in a million years.

In the final episode of Series 13: Flux, the Sontarans - aided by the Grand Serpent - have conquered the Earth. Finally. Now living on our feeble little rock, it's no surprise that they get a taste of human culture, which leads to one particular Sontaran developing an insatiable appetite for that sweet, delicious chocolate.

This results in a scene where Commander Shallo ransacks a corner shop, stuffing chocolate down his gullet like an excited kid on Christmas morning. He loves the stuff so much that he even makes a deal with the Doctor in exchange for the recipe, before proclaiming "CHOCOLAAAAATE" with a crazy, sugar-induced look in his eyes.

The scene received a divisive response from fans: some, like WhatCulture's own Alex Carlton, found it absolutely horrible, feeling that it ruined the Sontarans as a credible threat; elsewhere, others found it harmless and amusing.

Whichever camp you fall into, there's no denying that it's a very strange scene, and that it perhaps played up the humorous side of the Sontarans a little too much.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for over ten years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. In 2022, he took charge of WhoCulture and has grown it into the biggest Doctor Who channel on YouTube, and one of the biggest Doctor Who communities on the web full-stop. He has been writing and video editing since his early teens, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers, off the back of a burning obsession with the Matt Smith era of the show. Like many his age, he first got into Doctor Who with the 2005 revival, but has since gone back and fallen in love with the classic years too. If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order, or to give you a random factoid about the making of Gridlock, Danny is the person to ask!
