Kathryn Janeway was one of the most steadfast, resolute Captains in Trek's entire franchise. Her entire arc begins and ends with the search for home - keeping her crew safe, as happy as possible and on the right track. She excels at this, to the point where it almost overtakes her reasoning from time to time.

When Voyager encounters the Equinox, she sees a mirror of herself in Captain Ransom. Here is another captain who has done whatever it took to keep his crew safe. Only, he hasn't allowed morality to stand in the way - something she herself has held on to throughout her journey.

She begins a hunt like none she had ever displayed before. No weapon is off limits as she attempts to stop the Equinox from escaping. With the ships phasers, she inflicts heavy damage on the other vessel. She captures several of their crew and locks them in a room, unprotected from the retribution of the aliens they had murdered for fuel.
