Any spinoff of a beloved franchise, whether it's a video game, movie, or television show, has much expectation for fans going into it. This is primarily because a beloved initial entry can be hard to follow, and often times spinoffs tend to land as duds rather than successes.

While SG-1's first spinoff, Stargate Atlantis, came out a total success and a now equally beloved series, Stargate Universe did not have that kind of success.

In fact, the first episode of Stargate Universe is one of the most controversial for that series. This is because right off the bat the show came off as completely different from either of the other Stargate series.

While the plot of Stargate Universe's first episode revolved around establishing the characters and setting, Universe's tone was much darker than fans expected.

There was much more horrific violence and gratuitous sex than either of the other entries. The characters were much more complex and difficult to immediately fall in love with, unlike the cast of Atlantis and SG-1.

To many Stargate fans, Universe's first episode felt more like an episode of Battlestar Galactica than something from Stargate. As such the plot of the episode itself is unimportant in the face of the series' ultimate state as one of those unspoken sci-fi entries in pop culture, much like the first Star Wars Holiday Special.
