10 Most Controversial Stargate Episodes

6. Stargate SG-1, Season 1 Episode 5 - Broca Divide

A Broca Divide is named after the anthropologist who discovered the so-called Broca part of the human brain, Paul Broca.

Sadly, as with many early anthropologists, much of his work was shrouded in racism and divisive claims. Mr. Broca tried to use his discoveries as an explanation of how African-based humans were an evolutionary split point between early apes and Europeans, a completely scientifically wrong and absurdly racist viewpoint.

This anthropology term used for the name of a Stargate episode instantly led to controversy from those who knew anything about anthropology. Even now people are still uncomfortable with Stargate's willingness to use racist terminology in its episodes.

The episode itself revolved around SG-1 encountering a civilization of humans afflicted by a disease that reverted them into animal-like states, an obvious call back to Broca's more infuriating "scientific" claims.

Much of the episode is based on the conflict between the supposed "touched" and "untouched" while not really giving a definitive statement on the clear racial divide between the "civilized" people living in an ancient Minoan-influenced city, and the "uncivilized" living in the forests.

Many fans then and now find this episode to be quite upsetting to watch for the content of the episode, let alone the infuriating name.

This is because while the episode was clearly trying to tackle the topic of racial division in our world, much like Stark Trek before it. Stargate was unable to approach this sensitive topic with the same careful planning and discussion that other franchises before it had done.
