10 Most Disturbing American Horror Story Episodes

1. “The Coat Hanger” – Season 2, Episode 9

One episode and one episode only can take the crown for the most horrifically gut-wrenching viewing in the entirety of American Horror Story history. For that winner, none could argue that we must turn to Season Two, Episode Nine.

Though there is one moment in particular that rockets this episode to the top of this list, it is also worth mention Monsignor Howard’s shocking crucifixion. At the end of the episode, Howard attempts to baptize Leigh Emerson (that psycho Santa), though it doesn’t exactly work out as he planned. Emerson overpowers Howard, holding him underwater, then nailing him to a crucifix in the asylum’s chapel.

This act, though heinous, is dwarfed in comparison to an earlier one in the same episode – Lana’s attempted abortion. After being raped by Dr. Thredson, Lana is informed by Sister Mary Eunice that she has become pregnant. Suddenly the title of the episode takes on a pitch-black meaning – we watch as Lana attempts a coat hanger abortion. Saying the scene is painful to watch is an understatement, and to make matters worse, we later learn that it didn’t even work. If you endeavour to watch this scene, do so with caution, as it is not for the faint of heart.
