“Gee whiz, another Season One entry?” Correct, and this one’s a doozy. In this episode, you get one hell of a slap-in-the-face twist that’ll have you convinced you’re watching a Shyamalan flick. Before we indulge in that, however, this episode also provides a little more insight into the events that led to Tate’s death.

If you are like most people, for the first nine episodes of Murder House you were probably wondering how the character Larry got his signature Two-Face aesthetic. In episode ten, that question is answered when we see Tate, high on cocaine and crystal meth, venture to Larry’s office with gasoline and a grudge – watching the poor man scream and burn is decidedly bleak.

Now for the twist. Later in this episode, we watch an increasingly frantic Tate attempt to convince Violet to commit suicide. Though not too unusual by itself for one of his character, Tate’s behaviour is suspicious. We soon discover the reasoning behind it, however, when Violet stumbles upon her own corpse. Four episodes prior, Violet had attempted suicide, but appeared to have been saved by Tate. He reveals that she had, in fact, succeeded in her attempt; he had hidden her body, now rotting and swarmed with flies, to spare her the knowledge of her fate.
