10 Most Disturbing Stargate Moments

3. Abydos Is Destroyed

Abydos was the first planet that teams from Earth ever visited through the gate (not including Ernest Littlefield's fateful trip!) and as such, it has a special place in the hearts of the audience. The distinctive pyramid, rising imposingly out of the sand with a main entrance, flanked with great stone pillars beside, was a symbol for the Stargate movie and for the rebellion that O'Neil and Jackson encouraged.

The planet was revisited several times through SG-1. Jackson had married Sha're in the year between the first and second visit, though this family qas quickly broken by the arrival of Apophis, to claim the defeated Ra's territory. Over the next few years, the teams would return to Abydos a various intervals. It never quite made it to the level of another base site, but it was certainly an important and symbolic location for the people of Earth.

The return of the Goa'uld System Lord Anubis brought a dread to the Milky Way galaxy. He was a partially ascended Goa'uld who held knowledge of the ancients, though they would not step in to stop him. Daniel Jackson, who had by that time ascended himself, attempted to stop the System Lord from testing his new devastating weapon on the surface of Abydos - only to be stopped by Oma Desala, paving the way for Anubis to fire his weapon.

The Abydosian pyramid was obliterated with tremendous damage done to the surface of the planet. While, thankfully, the people of Abydos were saved, the once sacred spot was lost forever.
