10 Most Emotional Avatar The Last Airbender Moments
7. Zuko's Scarring
One of the most important aspects of the series was its ability to discuss mature issues despite the target demographic. Not only did it not patronise, but in many cases, it's how young viewers were able to learn about complex moral issues. One of the most powerful that the show tackled was the impact that parental abuse can have on a young mind.
In the first few seasons of the show, Zuko has been an aggressive menace if not the outright antagonist. His constant desire to hunt Aang is balanced with a few moments of compassion, but overall though he seems fundamentally flawed as a person.
Yet in the episode The Storm - when Iroh tells the story of how Zuko got the scar that plagues his face - it becomes clear why he acts this way, even if it doesn't redeem him then and there.
When you discover that his father left the mark to "teach him a lesson", you begin to understand how abuse manifests itself for the young prince. Despite how atrocious Ozai has been to him, he still fights for the approval of his father, and that is textbook parental manipulation.
This moment is so powerful because it not only makes you see Zuko's perspective, but it shows how a father figure can scar their children both physically and mentally.
