It's no secret that Cornelius Hawthorne wasn't the best father. He was racist, homophobic, and far too controlling of Pierce. In the episode Advanced Gay, Cornelius dies, and not a single fan mourned for him.

Half a season later, Cornelius sets up a video game in which Pierce, his friends, and Cornelius' illegitimate son Gilbert play through Cornelius's twisted, offensive world to win his inheritance. In this imaginary setting, Pierce finally gets to confront and defeat his horrible father with the help of his friends.

The most emotional segment of the episode comes towards the end, when Pierce gives up Cornelius's inheritance so Gilbert can have it. Gilbert put up with Cornelius's abuse but never got the name Hawthorne, so he's earned the inheritance more than Pierce. Because of Pierce's selflessness, a quality we don't often see from him, he gains a brother.
