10 Most Emotional Community Moments
2. Pierce & Gilbert
Up there with Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas and the paintball episodes for its high concept, Digital Estate Planning dealt with the study group trying to beat Pierce’s dad’s game in order to win his inheritance.
Gilbert is playing too though, and is way better at the game.
Abed’s ability to rework the challenge from the inside helps them win in the end, although they end up forfeiting.
Though Gilbert is the antagonist through most of the story, it becomes clear Pierce’s half-brother had been badly mistreated. Pierce comes to admire and respect Gilbert, who put up with the same bullying he did, and ‘didn’t even get to take his name’.
While this is yet another Pierce moment and marks an all-time high for the character (narratively, if not from a comedy perspective) it too was derailed by on-set tensions. With the shoot for this episode running long and it being the final day before the season wrapped, Chevy Chase’s temper was running short.
Dan Harmon wrote an epilogue on the fly where Pierce and his father played a game of virtual catch, but Chase refused to film it. Tragically, the incident later became one of the focal points of their falling out.
