10 Most Emotional Community Moments

1. Abed’s Film

NBC

One of the show’s earliest emotional moments was also its best. Coming in the third episode, Community found its emotional feet remarkably early.

Britta helps Abed with his documentary, getting cast as his mother, while Jeff is cast as the father. ‘I don’t want to be your father’, Jeff tells him, to which Abed replies ‘Perfect. You already know your lines’. It’s played for laughs initially, but later on just what that line means hits home.

Abed becomes obsessed with this film (though nowhere near as much as he will with later movies), alienating Britta and Jeff in the process. His actual father is incensed by this too, thinking Abed is wasting his time on something frivolous.

Once the movie is ready, Abed screens it for the reluctant trio. Jeff and Britta think the movie is nonsense, but Abed’s father is moved to tears. In Abed’s own quirky way, the film relays how he fears he is a burden to his own family, how he thinks he is the reason his mother walked out on them, and that he knows his father thinks the same.

It was the first indication that Community could merge comedy and drama together seamlessly, and it was never topped.
