3. Troy Leaves
This adventure Troy goes on is one which takes him out of the show. However, before it does, there’s a massive campus-wide game of 'the floor is lava'.
Most of the episode is full of the movie references, crazy stunts, unusual pairings and creative set pieces which typified the paintball episodes, but the longer the episode went, the more obvious it became that Abed wasn’t okay.
Britta suspected he wasn’t processing his grief properly from the beginning, failing to deal with the fact Troy would be leaving for good. Abed has convinced himself that the floor is indeed lava, and can never stop playing as that means Troy can never leave.
Troy eventually manages to talk Abed around, communicating with him in a way only best friends can. There’s obviously some emotions brought up for the audience by the impending exit, but a much bigger emotional toll comes from seeing these two struggle to say goodbye to each other.
