The Night King was the primary antagonist for almost all of Game of Thrones. The very first episode was even entitled, ‘Winter Is Coming’.

Created by the Children of the Forest in order to fight against the First Men, the Night King was the very embodiment of death with his intent of vanquishing the realms of men and raising his own undead army.

The attack on Hardhome back in the fifth season was a frightening exemplification of the Night King’s power, as were the final two episodes of the seventh season, which ultimately saw the Army of the Dead break through the Wall and head towards Winterfell.

‘The Long Night’, therefore, was an abrupt way for the Night King to meet his demise. Veterans of the show had speculated (or even hoped) that the Dead would penetrate much further through Westeros than they did.

Had the Night King been given a more detailed backstory and proved a greater threat in the final season, he would have been a strong contender for the best villain in the show.
