Of the many, many legal dramas produced throughout the 1990s, Joel Schumacher's A Time to Kill is certainly one of the most memorable and commercially successful.

But some 25 years after the fact, few ever expected the film to get the serialised sequel treatment, and certainly not with any original cast members returning.

But rather than just lazily reboot A Time to Kill for a new generation, Matthew McConaughey is attached to reprise the role of lawyer Jake Brigance in an HBO series based on author John Grisham's recently-released sequel novel, "A Time for Mercy."

A Time for Mercy sees Brigance defending a young boy who killed his mother's boyfriend after claiming he was abusive towards her - a matter complicated by the fact the dead boyfriend is a deputy sheriff.

McConaughey is no stranger to TV of course, having previously teamed with HBO for the first season of True Detective, for which he received Best Actor nominations at the Golden Globes and Emmys.

Considering that star-studded serialised TV has become stratospherically popular in the age of streaming, giving Grisham's novel a larger canvas as opposed to a conventional cinematic treatment makes all the sense in the world.
