7. Buffy sacrificing herself at the end of season 5
What is one surefire way to really make fans distraught? Kill off the main character. Buffy did die in the finale of the first season as well, but it lasted all of about 5 minutes. The season 5 ending was very different.
Buffy’s goal throughout the entire show and as a slayer was to protect the world – that included those closest to her. So, after Glory opened a portal to a Hell dimension and only Buffy’s sister Dawn contained the blood to close it, we knew the slayer would inevitably find a way to prevent her death. What we didn’t see coming was how. Realizing that they shared the same blood, Buffy decided to sacrifice herself instead to save both her sister and the world. It truly was the pinnacle of Buffy as a character, everything accumulated in to this one moment.
Seeing her body lying there, almost peaceful like afterwards left fans with so many emotions. Proud for what she had accomplished, happy she might finally get rest, but more than anything, heartbroken over our leading lady dying. What REALLY hurt though was seeing the rest of the cast in the background standing over her corpse in tears. We will never forget the look on Spike's face.
