10 Most Hated Battlestar Galactica Episodes
6. Sacrifice - Season 2, Episode 16
When terrorists take over the bar on Cloud Nine, holding several civilians hostage, they threaten to execute them unless the Cylon prisoner is handed over.
The title refers to whether Roslin and Adama are willing to sacrifice people close to them to stop the terrorists, but what the episode is really unwilling to sacrifice is the familiar formula found in these types of plots. Battlestar Galactica is at its best when exploring how a society of space survivors would function and adapt to their unique circumstance. Sacrifice, while decently executed, has a routine plot that we have seen countless times on other shows set on Earth. Basically it's a plain old hostage situation.
So, we get the usual negotiation scenes, like strategic planning on how to save the hostages, Kara getting into sniping position while waiting for a chance to take the shot, and of course military leaders torn between sacrificing innocent civilians while not caving in to terrorists demands. The performances and filmmaking make it all watchable, but in the end its an episode we can all sacrifice during a rewatch.
