10 Most Iconic Alien Planets In Modern Doctor Who

A human colony world; the Eleventh Doctor defended this settlement from his greatest enemies for hundreds of years and many believed it would be the site of his death.

A snowy, alpine world with only a few minutes of light per day, this planet was protected by a truth field and later a forcefield created by the Papal Mainframe. In 2013's The Time of the Doctor, the Doctor found a crack in time in the town of Christmas in which the Time Lords could return if the Doctor spoke his true name.

Because of the truth field, the Doctor wouldn't be able to lie - but if he answered the Time Lords' question, they would return and wage war with the Daleks, Cybermen, and more - all waiting beyond the forcefield.

A quaint and quirky yuletide village, the town of Christmas soon came under attack from the Doctor's enemies.

With the Time Lords eventually granting the Doctor a new set of regenerations for protecting them, the enemies were overwhelmed and Trenzalore saved.

However, The Name of the Doctor from earlier in 2013 showed an alternate future for Trenzalore where the Doctor hadn't been saved by the Time Lords. Appearing more like a vast, volcanic battlefield-graveyard, a memorable feature of the planet was a giant TARDIS overlooking it.

What resembled a grave was, in fact, the Doctor's TARDIS - his tomb - with its 'bigger-on-the-inside' flooding to the outside.

Both versions of the planet have played important roles in Doctor Who - being the location of one of the Doctor's greatest battles and a possible final resting place - but only one world is more iconic...
