The first half of Season Four had the difficult task of wrapping up the loose ends left in Ragnar's story.

For the most part, this worked out fairly well. However, there were some plot lines that became entirely abandoned - and one such plot point revolved around the French siblings, Roland and Therese.

This conniving duo plotted to reveal Count Odo's plans to appoint himself Emperor of France. Therese worked her way into Odo's good books and started a love affair in secret where Odo eventually spilled all of his secrets and plots.

The siblings brought the information before the current Emperor Charles, who had the two execute Odo by whipping him to death. After this, the three of them even had an offscreen sex life together as they rejoiced in foiling Odo's plans.

Then, out of nowhere, the three were sat eating dinner when Charles gave the order to have Roland and Therese strangled in their seats. The squabbles between these characters never affected the main plot in any meaningful way, and the series would have progressed the same without them.
