10 Most Powerful Weapons In Doctor Who History

9. Z-Bomb & Osterhagen Project

Back in the late 1980s, several Z-Bombs were placed at specific locations around the Earth as a final measure in defending the world against its deadlier enemies. A Z-Bomb has the ability to split an Earth-sized planet in half, which would effectively destroy it, along with everything living on its surface.

When Cybermen ships were heading towards Earth in The Tenth Planet, General Cutler wanted to use the Z-Bomb to destroy Mondas, the Cyberman homeworld. The First Doctor and Ben Jackson managed to stop him from doing this, as it potentially threatened half the population of the planet Earth as well.

Eventually, the Z-Bomb was replaced by a new system called the Osterhagen Project. This system was similar, though it was also more destructive. If you can believe that!

This was accomplished via several nuclear warheads, which, when activated, would annihilate the Earth's crust. This level of destruction would've killed every living thing on the planet, but it would also destroy and kill anything orbiting (and threatening) the planet too, making it a doomsday weapon of last resort.

Martha Jones considers using the Osterhagen Project in light of the Dalek invasion in the Series 4 finale, and unsurprisingly, the Doctor strongly opposes this option.
