At this juncture in the show the Federation holds a tentative and flimsy truce with the Cardassians. During this episode Dr Crusher and Picard are captured during a covert infiltration mission to a Cardassian base. Making matters worse a highly volatile situation on the Enterprise itself sees war-dog Captain (Jellico) taking command of the ship in Picard's absence to ensure it is ready should a confrontation take place.
As the 2-part episode unfolds audiences are treated to two captivating arcs of storytelling; one which focuses on the tale of Riker's battle for authority and one which follows a fascinating mental tussle with a Cardassian torture expert (Madred).
