6. Father Ted

Father Ted Careful Now
Hat Trick Productions

Leave aside the shady online behaviour of one of its co-creators and Father Ted is pretty much a perfect sitcom. Three seasons, twenty-five episodes, one of the all time great Christmas specials, it’s the perfect mix of humour and warmth; a true timeless classic.

The comedy of Father Ted is a glorious mix of zany high concept material mixed with a more traditional British/Irish low key, claustrophobic feel. Every performer is perfect, from the late great Dermot Morgan to Pauline McLynn as the bonkers Mrs Doyle and Ardal O'Hanlon, never nearly this good for the remainder of his career.

It even comes to a resonant, emotional conclusion, rare for comedies of the era before narrative became so important, made even more poignant by the passing of star Morgan a few months before the final season began.

Father Ted is renowned in the UK, but perhaps less well known worldwide. It deserves to be seen by the widest audience possible - it’s impossible not to be charmed and amused.
