In the same episode that we see a new side to Rebecca, we also see a different and much more shocking side to Ted. Up until this point he is very much a ‘glass half full’ kind of guy. He is full of optimism and kindness, even in the moment that his wife leaves him and he always has some words of wisdom to share with his team.

This episode introduces the damaging effects of his impending divorce. At first he aggressively snaps at Nate who is nervously attempting to help coach the team, which is extremely out of character for Ted, but, arguably, even more shocking than that is the moment he experiences an intense panic attack at the karaoke bar.

Whilst Rebecca is singing, he becomes distressed and staggers outside to catch his breath. It is the first time we see Ted lose control in this way and struggle to find a positive solution. Much like Jamie, here we see Ted’s vulnerability begin to surface and of all the people to come to his aid, it is Rebecca who comforts him.

This moment sparks the beginning of Rebecca’s change of heart, seeing this more human side to Ted, brings out the humanity in herself and presents the question of what other trauma Ted is hiding behind his façade of optimism.

Ellie has been part of the WhatCulture team since 2021 where she began as a freelance presenter for the WhoCulture channel. As a diehard Whovian with a BA (hons) degree in Drama and Acting, this role was the perfect opportunity for her to combine her screen presence training with her extensive Doctor Who knowledge. From there, she branched out to various other WhatCulture channels, including TrekCulture, and became a full time Content Producer/Video Presenter in 2023. Ellie is now a regular fixture on both WhoCulture and TrekCulture and has become a well respected public figure within both fandoms, building up a substantial following across her social media platforms and being given the opportunity to represent the channels and the wider communities at several industry events. Her favourite Doctor Who character is River Song and her favourite Star Trek character is Captain Janeway - which tells you everything you need to know about how she approaches her role within a generally male dominated field.
