Of all the characters in Ted Lasso, Rebecca’s ex-husband, Rupert, is by far the most detestable. He takes every opportunity to belittle and overshadow her, all whilst pursuing younger women right under her nose. He steals her thunder at her charity gala, buys 2% of her football club for his new girlfriend and even threatens to join her with said new girlfriend (also named Rebecca) in the owner’s box at every match – something that Ted very impressively manages to prevent in an intense round of darts.

Rupert's most hurtful and insensitive act though, is when he, rather smugly, reveals to Rebecca that he and his new, young fiancé are expecting a baby. This revelation is shocking for several reasons. Firstly, as remarked by Rebecca herself, Rupert is almost 70 years old and is about to have a baby but beyond that, it is then revealed that, during their marriage, he had always told Rebecca that he never wanted children. The devastation in her eyes as he cruelly admits that it was, in fact, with her that he did not want children is truly heart breaking to witness.

This is the defining point in which Rebecca finally decides to admit her wrong doings to Ted and is ready to accept the consequences. To her surprise and relief, Ted forgives her; understanding the hardship of divorce and having observed Rupert’s arrogance first hand.

These two scenes are perfect examples of why Ted Lasso is such a critically acclaimed series and particularly highlight how deserving Hannah Waddingham is of the many awards she has received for her portrayal of Rebecca Welton.
