Speaking of Rebecca’s wrong doings, it was quite the shocking revelation in season 2 to discover that Sam and Rebecca were each other’s mystery dates. Very cleverly, we had been led to believe for a while that it was Ted who Rebecca had been anonymously messaging but were soon informed that it was, in fact, Sam.

There is then some uncomfortable dramatic irony as we observe the two become more excited to meet until the time comes for them to discover the truth. Rightfully so, at first Rebecca immediately dismisses any possibility of a relationship ensuing due to her position as his boss but also due to the considerable age difference between them. Of course, these reasons are ignored and the two start a secret affair.

Whilst, in terms of the story, there are no real repercussions from their relationship, as an audience we were left feeling a little shocked by the choice of pairing and unsure whether to agree with it or not. Whilst it did show that Rebecca was finally becoming more open to finding love, Sam definitely didn’t seem like the most appropriate option.

In the spirit of tv drama, if there had been some sort of explosive consequence as a result of their affair then perhaps it would have seemed more justifiable for the plot but as it stands, it just felt slightly forced and irrelevant.
