Like Simon Grayson’s sacking, Stewart Donald’s takeover of the club from Ellis Short was something anyone who had followed the club last season would have been expecting.

And Short’s spectre looms over the team all year. Martin Bain is very clear with the crew (and his own staff) that Short is sick of plowing money into the club. The fans reaction to this is mixed at best. During a fan forum, one fan admits no one can criticise Short for the amount of money he spent during the Premier League years, then immediately insists the club desperately needs more investment.

Calls of ‘Short out!’ that blast from the terraces throughout the season aren’t as fickle as they seem though. With the club floundering in the Championship, Short picks the worst time to pull the plug.

If ever there was an example of Short’s lost interest in the club, it’s the fact he doesn’t feature once in the documentary. Archive footage from newsreels is all we get. New buyer Donald though is front and centre in every scene when he takes over. His consortium insists ‘the p*ss take party is over’. Considering Sunderland are flying high in League One, he might be right.
