3. Waters Of Mars

Doctor Who Waters of Mars

Moving into zombie territory, Doctor Who makes their audience fear one of the most common elements, water. After landing on Mars in 2059, the Tenth Doctor happens upon Captain Adelaide Brooke and the first human colony. Soon after, the Doctor realises that he's arrived the day before a fixed point in history, having to decide whether to save Adelaide and her team or let them die to save the timeline.

An organism known as The Flood entered the water supply of the doomed human colony and started to infect the crew of Bowie Base One, turning them into horrific zombie-like creatures. It's a simple idea and made effectively to create a visually substantial threat, allowing for the possession and bleakness of a zombie film without the gore.

We see the Doctor give in to his narcissistic tendencies as he believes to be above the rules of the universe, having saved it so many times. Claiming himself to be the Time Lord Victorious, the Doctor states he will now save influential figures and "little people".

Horrified by the Doctor's narcissism, Adelaide chooses to kill herself once she is brought home, reverting the Doctor's changes in the timeline. As he finally sees the full impact of his actions, the Doctor is overcome by guilt and shame as he realises there will always be a price to pay for his interference.
