10 Most Underrated Community Episodes
8. Basic Human Anatomy
Basic Human Anatomy stands out as the best episode of Season 4. Written by Academy Award winning screenwriter (and Community main cast member) Jim Rash, the episode follows Troy and Abed as they pretend to switch bodies a la Freaky Friday.
Not only is the Freaky Friday gag yet another sweet Troy and Abed friendship moment, it also leads to one of the most heartfelt scenes in the whole show. Apparently, Troy confided in Abed that he wanted to end things with Britta. As Abed, Troy explains his reasoning to Jeff, and as Troy, Abed has the break up talk with Britta.
Many fans criticize Season 4 for utilizing style-over-substance gags and parodies, which lack heart or meaning besides "it would be fun." While this is true in many cases, Basic Human Anatomy actually proves that the Freaky Friday bit is a necessary parody. Troy can't express how he feels, so he does so through Abed.
Tying in gags with what the characters are actually feeling is what makes Community Community, and this episode perfectly embodies that. Unfortunately, it feels lost within the rest of the Gas Leak Year.
