Riverdale's self-aware over-the-topness has grown weary over the past couple of years that even the most shocking plot developments aren't genuinely shocking anymore. The most shocking thing it has produced in recent memory, however, is spin-off Katy Keene.

Set a couple of years in the future, the lavish, stylish and completely infectious series stars Lucy Hale as the titular character, who hopes to achieve her dreams of becoming a fashion designer in New York City. And as she's on her way to achieving those dreams, the city around her offers up rich, developed personalities to both guide her and ask the questions she's afraid to.

Teen television has become a murky pool of angst-driven thrillers or overly ambitious sci-fis, but Katy Kane is a refreshing affair full of heart, joy and passion that will undoubtedly bring a smile to even the most cynical of faces. It subverts expectations, sparkles before your eyes and finally gives Riverdale's Ashleigh Murray the juicy material she deserves.

Here's hoping The CW allows it to continue sparkling by renewing it for a second season.
