Thanks to his upbringing and the drug-fuelled lifestyle, Bojack became a very damaged person, incapable of holding down a healthy relationship with anyone. In the very first episode of the show however, he met Diane, another damaged person who struggled with relationships in the past.

After agreeing to let Diane write a book about his life, he found out she was actually Mr. Peanutbutter's girlfriend, the dog he hated more than anyone. Over the next few episodes, Bojack became infatuated with Diane, and struggled knowing that he couldn't act on his feelings.

When he got drunk one night, unable to contain his feelings any longer, Bojack stole the giant 'D' from the Hollywood sign as a symbol of how he felt about her. From what we have seen from Mr. Horseman, this was probably the most romantic gesture he ever made for anyone.

What made things so much worse for Bojack was having to sit by and watch as Mr. Peanutbutter took the credit for it, lauded as something of a modern day Romeo, with Diane never learning the truth.
