The being that calls to Sybok across the galaxy is an old creature that may or may not be responsible for several of the creation myths dotted throughout the Milky Way. Trapped on the surface of Sha-Ka-Ree, or simply the planet that hovers in the middle of the galaxy, this creature was so starved for power that it took the time to torture Kirk and Spock while taunting Sybok for his belief.

Whether called Eden, Vor-To-Vor or Sha-Ka-Ree, the prison in which this creature is located has been disseminated through the various cultures of the galaxy. This ‘God’ then seemed to the origin of religion in the universe, even if it wasn’t truly aware of the impact it had on these races. It seemed at least mildly telepathic, as it was able to show Kirk images from Earth’s history before appearing as the standard bearded image of God.

The exact origin of the creature is unknown, yet it is safe to assume that it is thousands of years old. The Federation officers aboard the Enterprise-A were certain that no ship in existence had ever crossed the Great Barrier, with their own space-faring knowledge stretching back over two hundred years. The Klingon, Romulan and Vulcan representatives aboard the bridge all knew of the same creation myth, which goes back much further than this again.

Though fired upon by a Klingon Bird-Of-Prey, it is not entirely certain that the creature is dead. It may yet be waiting for the next vessel to make the foolish journey through the barrier.
