10 Overlooked Buffy The Vampire Slayer Episodes That Are Secretly Classics
1. I Only Have Eyes For You (Season 2, Episode 19)
Coming at a time when the story is at its darkest, I Only Have Eyes for You is an atypical monster-of-the-week episode that seamlessly wedges itself into the main arc - focusing on the ghosts of a high-school student and his former teacher and lover, who night after night possess the students and faculty of Sunnydale High and make them reenact their tragic final moments.
Whilst that premise alone is worthy of inclusion on this list, what truly elevates this amongst the rest is in how the ghost's turmoil manifests within Buffy and Angelus, completely flipping the script and acting as poignant commentary on their dynamic, both in terms of their undying love for one another, as well as the moral implications of their relationship.
Acting as something of an omen for the heart-breaking series finale, this episode's sharp writing is bolstered by two award-worthy performances from Sarah Michelle-Gellar and David Boreanaz, both of whom completely throw themselves into the material, culminating in some of the finest drama the show has ever produced.
It may get overshadowed by the more emotionally resonant season finale, but there's no denying that it's one of the best episodes of the show's entire run.
